Yes, if you make squadrons of ONE fighter, you follow the fighter within the battles and dogfights. You can also redirect it to attack other formations meanwhile the conventional squadrons are engaging primary threats.
In practice, it becomes a puzzle, once the AI tends to attack first the lone fighters, so how far you engage and how you notice the enemies squadrons affects your role and survival inside the battle. That's why I claim is not a shooter, rarely you'll see something coming from your front.
I also want to release this because my game play is poor and I want to collect more feedback. I'll make it also an open mod, ppl can send me files for discussion and make add-ons and such.
